CLIENT: The Community Builders and Federal Capital Partners
As the project manager for BB+M Architecture, we had the privilege of collaborating with TCB and FCP to renovate the historic Johnston Mill in the NoDa neighborhood of Charlotte. Originally built in 1916, this former textile mill was thoughtfully transformed while preserving its original brick walls and incorporating industrial details from the site into the final design.
Working closely with the NC State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) and the National Parks Service (NPS), the project secured historic tax credits and features 84 apartment units, along with a clubhouse, fitness room, maker’s space, and pool. Additionally, the overall development included the new construction of 151 apartment units adjacent to the 36th Street light rail stop, featuring a transit lounge where residents can relax, wait for the train, and enjoy coffee.
This transformation, known as NoDa Wandry, was honored as the Silver winner in the Adaptive Reuse category at the 2024 Multi Housing News Excellence Awards.
